'em' is a collection of cutlery crafted during Giao's journey through the 'Design Tool' module at NTU MA Product and Furniture Design 23/24. This unique set draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of Vietnamese cuisine and the profound stories of Vietnamese women.

In the realm of East Asian dining customs, chopsticks and spoons reign supreme for our daily meals. Vietnamese cuisine, often prepared in bite-sized portions, renders the conventional knife and fork obsolete. Yet, these utensils persist in restaurants and sidewalk eateries, catering to those who prefer them. Venture into the heart of Vietnam, and you'll encounter 'banh beo,' a delicacy served with a bamboo knife. Unassuming but practical, this tool effortlessly splits the steamed rice cake, doubling as a spoon.

Delving into my research, Giao uncovered the pivotal role women play as primary caretakers in Vietnamese families, shaping the nation's culinary landscape and dining etiquette. However, the revelation of persistent gender inequalities in education, pay, and social benefits became a catalyst for action. Embracing the ethos that 'all design is social,' as articulated by Boelen, Giao endeavored to make a meaningful contribution to the empowerment of Vietnamese women within the confines of this project.

"em" is a singular Vietnamese pronoun predominantly used by women to refer to themselves in conversations with their partners. This pronoun serves as the inspiration for the cutlery collection that encourages the celebration of femininity and self-love among Vietnamese women. The handles of the cutlery are shaped in the likeness of female figures, embodying the Four Virtues of Vietnamese women: Công (Hard-working), Dung (Beautiful), Ngôn (Well-spoken), and Hạnh (Well-behaved).

Each piece of 'em' has been lathed and carved by Giao, with invaluable assistance from the skilled technicians at the NTU workshop.
